He qualified for a Candidates Tournament for the first time in 1962 and then took part in many more Candidates Matches for the World Championship. He played his last Candidates Match in 1983 against Kasparov. Korchnoi was among the absolute world elite for decades. In the late 1970s he was number two in the world rankings behind Anatoly Karpov.
